Frequently Asked Questions

12 BIP39 words per Hinge, the highest single-object capacity in the catalogue. The pin core is engraved in 12 sequential segments, one BIP39 word per segment, 4 letters per segment. For a 12-word phrase, 1 Hinge ($99) is enough — the cheapest single-object option in the entire catalogue. A complete seed in a single working hinge. For a 24-word phrase, the 2-Hinge pack ($179) is the cheapest 24-word setup we sell. Split 12 words across each Hinge in two different locations. The Set ($299) gives you 1 Hinge plus 2 Cells and 1 Screw — full 24-word coverage across four object types. Most buyers reach the Hinge page because they want the cheapest entry. The 1-Hinge $99 SKU is the strongest first KeepCrypt purchase in the catalogue.

Pick by capacity per object and where it lives. Hinge ($99 / $179): highest capacity per object (12 words). Cheapest entry. Best for 12-word phrases in a single object, or the cheapest 24-word setup (2 Hinges = $179, split 12 + 12). Cell ($149 / $219): portable, drawer-placed, no installation. Best if you rent or cannot modify doors. Screw ($199 / $299): structural placement in furniture. Best if you build / own M10-fastened furniture. The Hinge is the only single object that holds a complete 12-word phrase. If your phrase is 12 words and you want one object in one place, the Hinge is the answer.

Installation is the same as replacing any standard interior hinge. Remove the existing hinge pin (use a small punch or finishing nail from the bottom of the knuckle). Lift the door off the hinge knuckles. Unscrew the leaves of the existing hinge from the door and the jamb. Mount the KeepCrypt Hinge using the existing screw holes, no new drilling required for standard mortises. Hang the door, drop in your engraved KeepCrypt pin from the top. Total time: ~15 minutes for someone who has hung a door before. About 25 if it is your first time. Uninstalling is the reverse and is fully reversible. Drive the pin out, unscrew the leaves, replace with your original hinge. Useful if you move, sell the property, or change your mind.

The pin is the consumable, not the Hinge. Every pack ships with a practice pin per Hinge for rehearsal. The carbide pen scribes Ti G2 cleanly under hand pressure; mis-strikes appear immediately and you re-do the segment before tapping the pin home. If you damage a real pin afterward, replacement 12-segment Ti G2 pin cores are $79. The Hinge body is unaffected. Drive the damaged pin out, scribe a fresh pin, tap it home. The SS 304 leaves and door installation stay in place. Peened-pin owners: a damaged pin means the Hinge is currently un-encoded but still functional as a hinge. Order a replacement pin core, scribe it, then re-peen on installation. The sequence has to be: scribe → install → peen.
